DOI to BibTeX: The Complete Guide to Converting DOIs to BibTeX Entries
This DOI to BibTeX converter is a free online tool that turns any Digital Object Identifier into a ready-to-paste BibTeX entry. Whether you need a DOI to BibTeX converter for one paper or an online DOI to BibTeX converter for your entire library, this page does it in seconds — with live Crossref metadata, no sign-up, and no API key.
BibTeX is the citation format used by LaTeX, Overleaf, JabRef, and dozens of reference managers. If you write academic papers in LaTeX, or if you use a tool that imports .bib files, this page is the fastest way to build your bibliography from a set of DOIs.
What Is a DOI?
A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a permanent, unique identifier for a scholarly object — a journal article, book chapter, dataset, preprint, or conference paper. It looks like 10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2, where 10.1038 is the registrant prefix and the rest is the object's unique suffix. DOIs never change, even if the publisher reorganises their website, so they are the most reliable way to link to an academic source.
What Is BibTeX?
BibTeX is a reference management format originally designed for LaTeX but now widely used by reference managers. A BibTeX file (.bib) contains entries like this:
@article{harris2020numpy,
title={Array programming with NumPy},
author={Harris, Charles R. and Millman, K. Jarrod and van der Walt, St{\'e}fan J.},
journal={Nature},
volume={585},
number={7825},
pages={357--362},
year={2020},
doi={10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2}
}
Each entry has a type (@article, @book, @inproceedings, etc.), a citation key (harris2020numpy), and a set of fields (title, author, journal, etc.). LaTeX reads these entries and generates formatted references automatically based on the citation style you choose.
Why Convert DOI to BibTeX?
BibTeX entries are tedious to write by hand — you need to get the author names, title casing, journal name, volume, issue, page range, and year exactly right, with the right curly braces and commas. One typo and LaTeX produces an error or malformed output. A DOI to BibTeX converter automates this entire process:
- Accuracy. Crossref metadata is maintained by publishers, so author names, journal titles, and page ranges are correct.
- Speed. A BibTeX entry that takes 3–5 minutes to format manually takes under a second here.
- Consistency. Every entry follows the same format, so your
.bibfile stays clean. - No typos. Automated conversion eliminates the manual errors that break LaTeX builds.
- Zero cost. This is a free DOI to BibTeX converter. No account, no email, no API key.
DOI to BibTeX Format: What Fields Are Generated
Our DOI to BibTeX converter generates entries with these fields:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
@article | Entry type (or @inproceedings for conference papers) |
key | Citation key: first author's family name + year + first word of title |
title | Article or paper title |
author | Full author list with and between names |
journal | Journal name |
volume | Volume number |
number | Issue number |
pages | Page range with -- (BibTeX convention) |
year | Publication year |
doi | The DOI (as 10.xxxx/xxxxx) |
url | Full URL (https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxxx) |
publisher | Publisher (when available) |
The result is a BibTeX entry that works with all major LaTeX bibliography styles, including plain, plainnat, abbrv, IEEEtran, apa, chicago, and mla.
Example: DOI to BibTeX Entry
Take the DOI 10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2. Our DOI to BibTeX generator produces:
@article{harris2020numpy,
title={Array programming with NumPy},
author={Harris, Charles R. and Millman, K. Jarrod and van der Walt, St{\'e}fan J.},
journal={Nature},
volume={585},
number={7825},
pages={357--362},
year={2020},
doi={10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2}
}
Notice how the citation key uses the first author's last name and year, the authors are separated by and (not commas, which is BibTeX convention), the page range uses a double dash, and the DOI is in a dedicated doi field.
How to Add a DOI to an Existing BibTeX Entry
If you already have a BibTeX entry and want to add a DOI to BibTeX, just add this field:
doi={10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2},
Most modern BibTeX styles (including IEEEtran, plainnat, and APA) will render the DOI in the formatted reference. If your style doesn't, you can also add a url field:
url={https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-020-2649-2},
Some users add both fields to be safe. Our DOI to BibTeX converter automatically includes both.
Bulk DOI List to BibTeX
One of the most common needs is converting a list of DOI to BibTeX — for example, an entire reference list from a paper, or a set of DOIs collected during a literature review. Our tool supports this directly:
- Paste one DOI per line in the Bulk DOI List textarea on the left.
- Click Convert List to BibTeX.
- All entries are fetched from Crossref and added to the list on the right.
- Download the entire library as a single
.bibfile.
This is much faster than converting one DOI at a time, and the resulting .bib file is ready to import into any reference manager or LaTeX project.
DOI to BibTeX API — How It Works
Our tool uses the Crossref REST API — the same API that Crossref itself uses to serve BibTeX exports. When you paste a DOI, our browser-side code fetches the metadata from api.crossref.org and converts it into BibTeX format. This means:
- No API key needed. Crossref's REST API is publicly accessible.
- Live data. The metadata is fetched fresh every time — no cache.
- No server-side storage. The conversion happens in your browser.
- Free for everyone. There are no rate limits for reasonable usage.
If you want to build a DOI to BibTeX API integration yourself, you can do the same thing in your own code by calling https://api.crossref.org/works/{doi} and parsing the JSON response into BibTeX format.
DOI to BibTeX with Python
If you want to convert DOI to BibTeX with Python, here's a minimal example that uses the Crossref API:
import requests
import json
def doi_to_bibtex(doi):
url = f"https://api.crossref.org/works/{doi}"
data = requests.get(url).json()["message"]
authors = " and ".join(
f"{a['family']}, {a['given']}" for a in data.get("author", [])
)
return f"""@article{{{data['DOI'].replace('/', '_')},
title={{{data['title'][0]}}},
author={{{authors}}},
journal={{{data.get('container-title', [''])[0]}}},
volume={{{data.get('volume', '')}}},
pages={{{data.get('page', '')}}},
year={{{data['issued']['date-parts'][0][0]}}},
doi={{{data['DOI']}}}
}}"""
This produces a valid BibTeX entry from a DOI. Our online tool does the same thing in your browser without requiring Python — but if you're building a script, the pattern above works.
DOI to BibTeX with Zotero, Paperpile, and Mendeley
Most reference managers support BibTeX import/export. Here's how Zotero DOI to BibTeX, Paperpile DOI to BibTeX, and Mendeley workflows work:
- Zotero: Zotero can import
.bibfiles directly. Download your library from our tool and drag it into Zotero. Zotero will create items with the correct metadata, including DOIs. - Paperpile: Paperpile supports BibTeX export from its own library, and also imports BibTeX files. You can use our tool to generate entries and then paste them into Paperpile's BibTeX import interface.
- Mendeley: Mendeley accepts BibTeX import via File → Import → BibTeX. This is the fastest way to bulk-add references with DOIs.
- JabRef: JabRef is a dedicated BibTeX manager. It reads
.bibfiles directly — our tool's output is fully compatible.
Using a DOI to BibTeX converter alongside your reference manager is faster than trying to fetch DOIs one at a time inside the manager, especially for large libraries.
Related Formats: ISBN to BibTeX, PMID to BibTeX, PDF to BibTeX
BibTeX conversion isn't only for DOIs. Other identifiers can also be converted:
- ISBN to BibTeX: ISBNs identify books. You can look up the ISBN on OpenLibrary or Google Books, get the book metadata, and format it as a BibTeX
@bookentry. Our tool doesn't currently support ISBN, but the pattern is similar. - PMID to BibTeX: PMIDs (PubMed IDs) identify biomedical papers. You can fetch metadata from the NCBI E-utilities API and format it as BibTeX. Many PMIDs also have DOIs — if so, you can use our DOI to BibTeX converter directly.
- PDF to BibTeX: PDFs don't contain structured metadata. You need to extract the DOI from the PDF, then convert the DOI to BibTeX. Some tools use the PDF's first-page text to guess the DOI, then look it up on Crossref.
- Text to BibTeX / Article to BibTeX: If you have a plain-text reference (like an APA citation), you can usually extract the DOI from it and paste that into our tool.
- APA to BibTeX: If you have an APA citation with a DOI, extract the DOI and paste it into our tool. The DOI is the fastest path from any citation format to BibTeX.
In all cases, the DOI is the key — if you have a DOI, you have everything you need.
Common DOI to BibTeX Mistakes
These are the mistakes we see most often when people convert DOIs to BibTeX by hand:
- Using commas between authors. BibTeX uses
andbetween author names, not commas. Commas separate family name from given name within each author. - Using a single dash for page ranges. BibTeX uses a double dash:
357--362, not357-362. - Forgetting to escape special characters. Accented characters like
éshould be written as{\'e}in BibTeX. - Not protecting capitalization in titles. BibTeX lowercases titles by default, so proper nouns need to be wrapped in braces:
{NumPy},{DNA}. - Duplicate citation keys. If two papers share a key, LaTeX will produce an error. Our tool generates unique keys automatically.
- Using the full https URL in the doi field. BibTeX's
doifield should contain the bare DOI string, not the URL. - Missing a comma after the last field. Actually, BibTeX doesn't require it, but the convention is to include it — and some parsers are strict.
Our DOI to BibTeX converter gets all seven right — every time.
